On 22nd March 2016, two explosions took place at Zaventem airport at 07:58 local time (06:58 GMT), followed by a further blast at the Maelbeek Metro Station an hour later.  The explosions would have killed at least 31 people and injured nearly 260.

Following the attacks in Brussels, the Channel Island Ports has been on high terror alert and has increased the police presence.

The States of Jersey Police said: “It is common practice following a critical incident of this nature to step-up security at the ports.  In order to reassure islanders and in particular, commuters, they may now see an enhanced police presence at the airport and harbour.”

Guernsey Police said: “The local threat level hasn’t changed.  We continue to carry out increased security checks on passengers arriving in the island.”
