A cargo vessel loaded with sand sank 50 meters away from the shoreline of Barangay Montañeza, Malabuyoc, Cebu earlier this week.

According to the Malabuyoc police spot report, in coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard Cebu, the cargo vessel LCT MARC JASON III came from Tampi, Amlan, Negros Oriental and was heading to Sta. Fe in Bantayan Island.

On Tuesday, at around eight o’clock in the evening, ship captain Francisco Orbeta decided to dock the vessel in Malabuyoc after noticing that the ship was starting to tilt sideways and conducted an engine check-up.

All 17 crew members abandoned ship.

The following day, the cargo vessel fully capsized.

On Friday morning, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources of the Tañon Straight Protected Seascape checked the area where the sunken vessel was located.

According to DENR, there was no oil spill and fortunately, no corals destroyed.

But the department will still conduct a biophysical damage inspection to check the whole area for verification.

Residents are bothered that if the vessel is not salvaged right away, the ship might spill oil and affect their livelihood.
