The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Puerto Rico is searching for the missing engineer.
Luis Leyva Aliaga, a Chilean citizen, Chief Engineer of the cargo ship Berkay N, was reported missing on Thursday. It is predicted that he might have fallen over side.
The reports say that the engineer was last seen at 2300 hours Wednesday. Next morning, he did not report for his watch.
The Coast Guard dispatched a cutter, a C-130 search aircraft, and two helicopters in search of the engineer. The search is being focussed on area 45 nm north of Puerto Rico between San Juan and Aguadilla.
USCG Sector Puerto Rico reported that they do not have information at this time on the cause of the accident, nor can they comment on any investigation into the circumstances of the Mr. Aliaga’s disappearance.
The vessel was en route from Gibraltar to Cuba at the time of the incident.
