Crude Oil Tanker Ran Aground on Western Scheldt, Netherlands

On October 26, an Aframax tanker loaded with crude oil reportedly ran aground after suffering from mechanical failure.

What happened?

The Aframax tanker ‘Maria Bottiglieri’ ran aground on Western Scheldt up Vissingen abeam of Borssele, Netherlands. The vessel was proceeding upstream enroute from USA to Antwerp when the grounding incident occurred.

Rescue tugs dispatched:

Three tugs were dispatched to the scene of the grounding and was refloated with an hour and a half. The tanker proceeded towards its journey at a reduced speed of 4 knots. But subsequently the vessel was anchored for further survey and repairs. The vessel is reportedly said to have suffered from mechanical failure.

Investigation launched:

An investigation has been launched into the incident to determine the cause of grounding. None of the crew members onboard the vessel were injured or pollution to the environment was reported.
