CSCL revealed in an announcement on Friday that a unit of China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) has entered into bareboat charter agreements for the leasing of six ultra-large containerships with a near record-setting carrying capacity of 21,000 TEU.

As per the agreements, the six vessels will be leased to a CSCL HK by China Shipping for a period of 12 years upon delivery of the vessels.  The vessels are to be delivered between the period from April 2018 to December 2018.

Also, the agreement states that the 21,000 TEU class will be built with a capacity of no less than 20,988 TEU.  It also includes options for up to five additional vessels.

However, the announcement did not specify where the vessels will be built.

At 21,000 TEU, the vessels are second largest containerships ever ordered.  Early this year, South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries entered into a contract with OOCL for the construction of six containerships with 21,100 TEU capacity.  Delivery of those ships is expected by November 2017.
