A Chinese jigger ready to leave Montevideo for the South Atlantic suffered a serious fire which  started  in the engine room and rapidly spread to the rest of the vessel.  The vessel was fully provisioned with 300 tons of fuel.  The vessel was also carrying 62 cylinders with different gasses.

The forty-crew members were taken ashore late Saturday night and special squads extinguished the fire.  A crew of eleven fire experts followed the situation closely and a chain reaction was averted by removing the cylinders in time.

It took the whole of Sunday and a few extra hours to contain the fire.  What is certain is that the vessel is a complete loss.
