Pilot Died After Pilot Boat Collided with Cargo Ship, Italy

On October 18, a pilot reportedly fell overboard and lost his life when his pilot boat collided with a cargo vessel.

What happened?

The 61 year old pilot fell overboard and died after his pilot boat reportedly collided with a general cargo ship ‘Skylark’ in Porto Nogaro, Italy, Adriatic sea. The cargo vessel was enroute from Porto Nogaro to Turkey when the incident occurred.

Pilot boat disabled:

The pilot was present with another pilot onboard the vessel escorting the cargo vessel ‘Skylark’, the boat was assigned to take pilot to port after pilotage completion but due to technical glitch the communication between the cargo vessel and the pilot vessel failed prior to collision with boat trying to warn freighter of dangerous maneuvering.

Pilot thrown into water:

The freighter reportedly struck the boat and the pilot was thrown into water by jolt, later he was found dead. The cargo vessel was brought to anchor on outer anchorage and is currently detained at the port for further investigation.
