Pirates Release Kidnapped Crew

On April 11, three Indian youths who were kidnapped by the Indian navy are released.

What happened?

On January 31, three Indian youths hailing from Himachal Pradesh were serving in the Merchant Navy when they were reportedly kidnapped by Nigerian pirates.

The Indian youth were kidnapped along with their captain for ransom and their ship was hijacked.

On March 12, the family received a satellite call from Nigeria. Speaking to the family, Sushil informed them that some Nigerian sea pirates had hijacked his ship and kidnapped three Indian crew members, including him. He revealed that the other two kidnapped crew members are Pankaj Kumar from Samloti and Ajay Kumar from Palampur, both were from Kangra district.

Statement released

After the incessant talks with the pirates and officials, the Indian government has successfully negotiated the release of kidnapped sailors.

Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted, “We have secured the release of three Indian nationals Sushil Kumar, Pankaj Kumar and Ajay Kumar – all from Himachal Pradesh who were abducted in Nigeria. I appreciate the efforts of Shri B.N.Reddy Indian High Commissioner in Nigeria”.
