On July 14, a product tanker “Maritime Jingan” reportedly spilled about 500 gallons of benzene while moored at Vopak Terminal, thereby shutting down the Houston Ship Channel for a short period of time.

The Coast Guard and a Harris County Hazardous Material Response team responded to the spill  and the ship channel was closed at 12.23 pm between the Lynchburg Ferry Crossing and Carpenters Bayou.

The Coast Guard said that a small portion of the benzene entered the water and the cause is under investigation.
