River Pilot Dies After a Tragic Accident While Boarding a Ship

A river pilot was involved in a tragic accident in Gravesend Reach while he was boarding a general cargo ship heading for Spain.  The emergency responders rushed to his aid but were unable to save his life.  The pilot was boarding a Sunmi general cargo ship when the accident happened.

Port of London Authority said in a statement, “The Port of London Authority has confirmed that last night at around 6.10pm, one of its pilots was involved in an accident while boarding a ship, Sunmi, in Gravesend Reach.  PLA teams on duty, the emergency services, and the RNLI did all they could subsequent to the accident, but tragically the pilot passed away”.

Robin Mortimer, PLA chief executive said: “Our deepest condolences are with our colleagues’ family and friends at this very difficult time.  We have been in touch with the family and are offering whatever support we can.”

An investigation has been launched into the incident by the Port of London Authorities and the Marine Accident Investigation Branch.

They are expected to arrive at the PLA’s Gravesend base to investigate the tragedy.
