Tug Detained in Vigo

On March 19, a tug was detained for serious shortcoming and was reportedly fined 50,000 Euros.

What happened?

The tug ‘Eddy 1’ was running low on fuel and was enroute from Venezuela when it entered the Vigo port for refuelling. However, the tug was detained at the port of Vigo for serious shortcomings and fined 50,000 Euros.

Shortcomings noticed

A storm had triggered its fuel consumption until it ran out of enough fuel to reach its destination, Rotterdam, so it opted to make a shortstop in Vigo to refuel, however, without flying the mandatory Spanish flag.

The Civil Guard denounced it to the Maritime Captaincy and, as a result of the visit of their inspectors, ordered the arrest for serious deficiencies related to the safety of the ship due to the deficient rescue and fire fighting devices and the navigational equipment.

The shortcomings also included documentaries such as the lack of a valid certification or a liability insurance of the shipowner. Its five crew were found to have scarce food for a voyage started in Venezuela. With regard to the working conditions of the crew – most of them from Croatia – the Captaincy resolution also added breaches of the International Convention on Maritime Labour.

Detained at port

The tug remained moored in the dock of commerce and the consignee Noroeste Shipping was in permanent contact with the owner of the tug, its classification society Bureau Veritas and with the Dutch Maritime Administration with the aim to correct the shortcomings.
