USS Arizona

USS Arizona was a Pennsylvania-class battleship built for and by the United States Navy.  The ship was launched on June 19, 1915.  USS Arizona was the second and last of the Pennsylvania class of “super-dreadnought” battleships.

During the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, Arizona received a hit by a 800-kilogram bomb just forward of turret two on the starboard side.  Within a few seconds the forward powder magazines exploded, gutting the forward part of the ship.

The explosion ignited furious fires in the forward part of the ship.  An estimated of 1,177 officers and crewmen were either killed by the explosion and fire or were trapped by the rapid sinking of the ship.  The wreck still lies at the bottom of Pearl Harbor.
