[Watch] How A Vessel Gets A New Class

While transport ships may not put a premium on looks, they still have to get painted like any other boat. The German firm Hapag-Lloyd shows what it takes for their Quebec Expressto get a shiny new coat. With multiple cranes, each several stories high, doing the work, it still takes several hours into the night for the entire hull to get painted.

For boats that spend most of their time in water, like the Quebec Express and other Hapag-Lloyd ships like it, paint jobs are essential. It’s the best way to prevent organisms from growing on the bottom of the hull. It might be not the weirdest boat you’ll see all day. But all ships, no matter their cost or purpose, follow the same rules of the ocean.
