3,600 Ships Surpass Legal Requirements

Environmental Ship Index (ESI) is a register of 3,600 vessels maintained by the International Association for Ports and Harbours (IAPH).  IAPH will present the results of the performance of vessels on regulatory requirements every five years in Paris on 4th December at an event associated with COP21, the Climate Summit of the United Nations.  A further 40 of the ESI-listed vessels are eligible for rewards from ports providing incentive schemes for minimal emissions in port, IAPH md Fer van de Laar said.

Efficient shipping practice is encouraged with  ESI discounts.  But to develop standards, type of cargo, engines, volume, draft and the likes are to be considered.  Vessels that report their annual miles travelled and the fuel consumed receive incentive points.  The ESI was designed by the ports of Le Havre, Bremen, Hamburg, Antwerp, Amsterdam and Rotterdam.  The index expresses the environmental performance of vessels in terms of the emission of air pollutants (NOx and SOx) and CO2.

The rewards offered by ports comprise a discount on harbour duties ranging from 5% to up to 100% in some cases.

‘The number of rewarders has stagnated.  If more ports take part, more vessels will be registered’, said van der Laar.  “The ESI appears to be a simple but powerful tool for ports, in supporting shipowners  who perform better than legal requirement.   This way, they contribute to a better environment and assist the port in obtaining their licence to operate.”
