Becker Marine Systems has presented a new rudder profile, the optimised Schilling Twisted Trailing Edge Rudder.
The rudder is suitable for tankers, general cargo carriers and some research vessels which will benefit from increased manoeuvrability. The design meets customer demand for a propulsion solution with improved manoeuvrability in one rudder.
Ships who will benefit are those which usually have to travel long distances to their area of operations.
Walther Bauer, director of sales and projects at Becker Marine Systems, said: “We are getting consistently positive feedback about the improved performance of the rudder thanks to its asymmetric trailing edge.”
Development of the rudder begun a few years ago but the product is now encountering increased demand on the market, this is said to be due to the environmental regulations in the shipping industry. The rudder’s environmentally-friendly energy efficiency means it is a further edition to Becker Marine Systems’ existing energy-saving solutions.
Mr Bauer concluded: “We combine the rudder with our specially optimised rudder bulbs in order to further lower energy consumption.” At the start of the year Becker Marine Systems also recorded incoming orders for ten Twisted Trailing Edge Rudders for general cargo carriers with a carrying capacity of 3,300 and 8,500 dwt.

Every day there is a huge buzz of some new technology claiming to make a ship energy efficient. While this could be true, it is necessary for every ship Manager to ensure that such new technologies indeed offer fuel savings. The only way to ensure this is to have a simple, robust data augmentation tool like VEEMS (Viswa Energy Efficiency Management System). There is always a need to have a proper tool to measure and check whether your ships are energy efficient. It is for this reason, Viswa Lab has come out with a user-friendly, robust, data augmentation tool to measure a ship’s energy efficiency standards.
VEEMS has a tag line –
“Only if you can measure it, you can control it!”
