Are you making plans for what to pursue at university? Or perhaps you’re a final-year student about to enter the job market.
Either way, you’re probably wondering about the job prospects ahead of you — and how you can land one of the highest paying jobs in the world to create the life you want.
For many students, this involves finding a job that gives them fulfilment and purpose. Just as many consider the lifestyle they want to lead and what that will cost.
For some, this might involve less monetary compensation. Others may want a more lavish lifestyle.
It’s important to note that neither way of thinking is wrong — it simply depends on what is right for you.
Your goals are defined entirely by yourself, whether you hope to achieve a high-paying job at the end of your studies or not.
If that is what you envision for yourself, you’re probably wondering which jobs can give you the best salaries.
Here are the highest paying jobs in the world, according to Indeed:
Cardiologist
Cardiologists are doctors who specialise in preventing, diagnosing and treating heart conditions.
They monitor and treat patients’ cardiovascular health, including everything from heart attacks to blood clots, congenital conditions, and high blood pressure.
Cardiologists must undergo years of study and training before they manage to land a position as a specialist.
On top of medical school, this includes a three-year residency in internal medicine and three to five years of cardiovascular training — which involves rigorous clinical training.
On average, cardiologists earn around US$351,827 per year.
Anesthesiologist
Have you ever undergone surgery or a procedure that required you to be put to sleep for a while? Usually, the drugs used to induce this are administered by an anesthesiologist.
Throughout the surgery, they will then monitor your vital signs, ensuring that you remain safe whilst the procedure is ongoing.
Anesthesiologists similarly require years of training and studybefore they are allowed to practise.
After medical school, they must complete a four-year residency programme, become licensed by their state, country or area, and get board certified.
Anesthesiologists earn around US$326,296 per year, making it one of the highest paying jobs in the world.
Orthodontist
Orthodontists are a type of dentist who specialises in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of irregularities in the jaw and mouth.
This usually involves correcting jaw structures and identifying potential problems in teeth alignment.
To become an orthodontist, you’ll need to complete around 12 years of training. This includes dental school on top of an additional orthodontics specialty education.
You may also have to undergo residency training, which takes around three years. This can result in board certification.
Orthodontists earn an average of US$264,850 per year.
Psychiatrist
Taking care of your mind is just as important as that of your body — and psychiatrists are at the forefront of this.
In other words, psychiatrists are doctors who specialise in mental health. They assess mental and physical conditions to diagnose and treat mental, emotional and behavioural disorders.
To become a psychiatrist, you have to undergo four years of psychiatry residency after completing medical school.
These will be administered in a hospital working with patients, as well as in learning various forms of psychotherapy and the use of psychiatric medications.
Following this, psychiatrists are usually board certified. In the US, they must be re-certified every 10 years.
Psychiatrists tend to earn around US$224,577 per year.
Surgeon
Surgeons are doctors responsible for performing procedures and operations on patients. As leaders of this team, they make important decisions about the patient’s health and safety.
After the procedure, they are also the main point of contact for the patient and monitor the postoperative care and treatment.
Surgeons are required to go through rigorous training and education. After around 10 years of study, including housemanship, you can achieve the status of a general surgeon.
Specialising in a specific area of surgery requires further study and training which can take up to six years.
Surgeons earn around US$216,248 per year.
