Astomos Energy Corporation (Astomos) and INPEX Corporation (INPEX) have announced the completion of a B24 biofuel bunkering at Sharjah port in the emirate of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), reads an INPEX release.
The bunkering followed an agreement between the two companies announced last month.
First biofuel to VLGC in Middle East
INPEX supplied the fuel to very large gas carrier (VLGC) Lycaste Peace, which is owned by NYK Line and chartered by Astomos, on May 21 through the bunker vessel the Monjasa-operated Monjasa Shaker.
According to the companies, the operation marked the first instance in which biofuel was supplied to a VLGC in the Middle East. (As previously reported, the Lycaste Peace was part of a biofuel demonstration completed in Singapore earlier this year.)
The Lycaste Peace safely completed the use of the B24 biofuel on 5 June.
The B24 biofuel consists of 24% fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) and 76% very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO). Dubai-based Neutral Fuels produced the FAME used in the supplied B24 biofuel from waste cooking oil collected from restaurants and hotels in the UAE. Monjasa supplied the VLSFO and blended it with the FAME.
