Partnership for Maritime Decarbonization
The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonization (GCMD) and the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) have come together in a new partnership aimed at decarbonizing the shipping industry. This collaboration will focus on tackling the environmental impact of the maritime sector by working on reducing carbon emissions.
Over the course of two years, the GCMD and OGCI will collaborate on various projects to improve energy efficiency, promote the use of sustainable fuels, and explore the possibilities of implementing onboard carbon capture technology.
Shipping is a vital industry that plays a significant role in global trade and economic development. However, it is also one of the most polluting sectors, contributing to a large portion of carbon emissions worldwide. By working together, both partners aim to drive positive change and promote a more sustainable future for this critical business sphere.
Expanding Cooperation: Project REMARCCABLE
The alliance between the two companies expands on the ongoing cooperation between OGCI and GCMD through their joint effort, “Project REMARCCABLE,” which aims to showcase large-scale onboard carbon capture from start to finish.
GCMD is focused on assisting in the reduction of carbon emissions in the shipping industry through various testing programs and experiments. They are working on projects that involve the use of ammonia as a fuel for ships, ensuring the reliability and environmentally friendly nature of alternative green fuels, promoting carbon capture initiatives, and increasing the implementation of energy-efficient technologies.
By collaborating with OGCI, they aim to share their knowledge and expertise to develop effective solutions together.
OGCI’s Contribution
In the new partnership, OGCI will contribute their knowledge and skills in advancing shore-based CO2 capture projects at carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) hubs to help progress onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS), which is currently in a preliminary stage of development.
Besides OCCS implementation, during the upcoming two years, the two companies will work together to enhance energy efficiency and reduce emissions, emphasizing the development of innovative fuels such as ammonia, methanol, and biofuel blends.
