In the opening keynote of the London reception, Li Peng, a Counsellor at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the UK, emphasized the crucial role of shipping in global trade. Joined by Guy Platten, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping, and Jos Standerwick, Chief Executive of Maritime London, Mr. Li remarked, “Shipping accounts for more than 80% of global trade. In China and the UK, over 95% of imports and exports are transported by ships, making shipping the backbone and ‘barometer’ of the global economy. It’s hard to imagine a world without the shipping industry.”

Pledge for Continued Cooperation

Mr. Li’s call for continued economic and trade cooperation between China and the UK was echoed by Zhou Yin, Level 2 Inspector at the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission. Zhou highlighted London’s status as a world-renowned shipping center and emphasized Shanghai’s ambition to develop into a world-class international shipping hub.

Endorsements from Maritime Leaders

Chris Hayman, Chairman Emeritus of Seatrade Maritime, praised the growth of Shanghai and the North Bund as centers of excellence in maritime services, logistics, technology, and ship construction. He noted Shanghai’s position as the world’s busiest container port and underscored the importance of maritime events in fostering knowledge sharing and relationships.

Emphasis on Decarbonization and Cooperation

Jos Standerwick spoke on behalf of Maritime London, emphasizing the industry’s role in global business partnerships and the urgent need to meet the 2030 decarbonization targets. He highlighted the industry’s challenges, including managing the effects of decarbonization legislation and geopolitical instability.

Guy Platten emphasized the need for a holistic approach to meet the IMO’s 2050 climate targets for shipping. He called for the availability of low and zero-carbon fuels, the necessary infrastructure at ports, and training for the workforce, stressing that global solutions are essential to achieve these goals.

Signing of MOUs for the North Bund Forum

In a move towards greater cooperation, three Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) were signed, announcing that the Baltic Exchange, the International Chamber of Shipping, and Seatrade Maritime will serve as overseas partners of the North Bund Forum. These MOUs commit to extensive cooperation in resource sharing, event promotion, industry development, and joint activities.

Upcoming North Bund Forum

The North Bund Forum, co-hosted by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and the Ministry of Transport of the PRC, will take place in Shanghai in late October 2024, furthering the commitment to international maritime cooperation.
