Wärtsilä, in collaboration with Chevron Shipping Company, is converting engines on six of Chevron’s LNG carriers from dual-fuel (DF) to spark gas (SG) operation. The groundbreaking initiative aims to reduce methane slip and lower greenhouse gas emissions, supporting Chevron’s efforts to minimize the carbon intensity of its operations.
Methane Slip and its Environmental Impact
Methane slip occurs when small amounts of methane are not fully combusted during LNG fuel use, leading to heat-trapping emissions. While methane has a shorter atmospheric lifespan than CO₂, it is 25-30 times more potent in terms of heat retention over a century, making its reduction critical for environmental protection.
Conversion to Spark Gas Operations
The Wärtsilä 50DF to SG engine conversion replaces diesel pilot fuel with spark ignition, optimizing combustion and significantly reducing methane emissions. This technology enhances fuel efficiency while supporting the global push for greener marine operations.
