Finland’s Wärtsilä has announced that it had been contracted to equip three container ships owned by German operator Leonhardt & Blumberg with its latest carbon capture and storage-ready (CCS-Ready) scrubber systems. This retrofit project marks one of the first in the marine industry to prepare vessels for future CCS integration.
CCS-Ready scrubbers
The CCS-Ready scrubbers will ensure compliance with current SOx emission regulations while providing a pathway for seamless adoption of a full CCS system in the future, it said. This solution not only helps reduce operational costs by allowing the use of more affordable heavy fuel oil (HFO) but also aligns with the industry’s decarbonisation goals by lowering the ships’ carbon footprints.
As part of the scrubber installation, Wärtsilä will conduct additional design and engineering work to facilitate the future integration of a CCS system. A fully integrated system would remove major pollutants from the exhaust, with carbon stored onboard and safely disposed of upon reaching port.
The 3600 TEU vessels will be fitted with Wärtsilä’s 27.5 MW CCS-Ready, Vessel General Permit (VGP)-compliant scrubber systems. Delivery is set to commence in September, with Greentec Marine Engineering handling the retrofit engineering and installation.
