Danish shipping company Uni-Tankers has successfully reduced the carbon intensity (CI) of its fleet by 37.6%, measured against the 2008 International Maritime Organization (IMO) baseline. This achievement has been independently verified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), confirming the firm’s alignment with industry standards, reports Offshore Energy.
Progress Towards 2030 Emission Reduction Goal
Uni-Tankers highlighted that this milestone reflects its dedication to sustainability and its efforts to meet its 2030 target of a 40% carbon intensity reduction.
This shows the company is well on track to achieving this ambitious goal.
ABS Verifies Emission Reductions
Lefteris Karaminas, ABS Manager of Global Sustainability, emphasized the increasing importance of ship emissions for vessel owners. Regulatory pressures and market demand for cleaner vessels are driving the need for careful emissions monitoring and reduction strategies.
Daniele Bottino, ABS Manager of Business Development, said, “We are very pleased that the outcome of the ABS benchmarking service to the latest IMO strategy confirmed Uni-Tankers’ alignment with all trajectories relating to the reduction of GHG emissions.”
“Companies actively engaged on energy management and the energy transition can see how the result of their actions fairs against the IMO targets and adjust their strategy accordingly. ABS offers a range of services, assisting companies to diligently pursue their decarbonization journey.”
Fuel-Saving Technologies Implemented
Uni-Tankers has implemented fuel-saving technologies on 11 of its 16 owned vessels between 2022-2023, up from 7 vessels in the previous year.
This step is part of the company’s commitment to enhancing the sustainability of its fleet.
B30 Biofuel Testing Results
In collaboration with Bunker Holding Group, Uni-Tankers conducted B30 biofuel testing on its vessels in 2023.
The test results revealed a 42% reduction in particle emissions. Also an 18% reduction in carbon monoxide emissions compared to traditional LSMGO fuel. There was no significant change in NOx emissions.
Methanol Bunkering Demonstration
In April 2023, Uni-Tankers participated in the first ship-to-ship (STS) methanol bunkering demonstration in the Caribbean, alongside partners Waterfront Shipping, NYK, and others.
This was conducted at the Port of Point Lisas in Trinidad and Tobago.
Commitment to Decarbonization
Uni-Tankers’ sustainability initiatives demonstrate the company’s recognition of decarbonization as a vital aspect of its future strategy.
These efforts underscore the company’s role in promoting cleaner practices within the maritime industry.
