Saudi Ports Authority Sees Fewer Containers in September

The cargo throughput of ports owned by the Saudi Ports Authority increased by 7.82% during September 2024, with the total cargo volume recording 28,097,022 tons, reports Container News.

Export and Import Containers Growth

Containers exported increased by 9% to 255,606 TEUs, while imports rose by 18% to 258,007 TEUs. However, in the same timeframe of 673,124 TEUs, the total containers handled, including transshipments, decreased by 8.08 per cent compared with the same period last year. Transhipment containers dropped sharply to reach a low of 42.98%, while the total TEUs stood at 159,511.

General Cargo and Bulk Cargo Performance

About bulk cargo, Mawani said the general cargo handled for the month was 975,406 tons, while the solid bulks stood at 4,473,019 tons and liquids at 15,277,608 tons.

Livestock and Vehicle Movements

The ports saw 343,952 cattle heads pass through during the month, a sharp down of 35.58% from the 533,948 cattle heads that passed through the same month last year 2023. On the other hand, vehicle traffic was up by 10.51%, which totalled 98,087 vehicles.

Decline in Shipment Traffic and Passenger Figures

Ports operated by Mawani recorded a decrease in shipment traffic by 5.18 per cent after 988 ships called at the ports in September while the number of passengers decreased by 39.46 per cent, recording 44,166 passengers for the month.
