ABS organized a U.S. Maritime Strategy Workshop in Washington, D.C., bringing together industry and government leaders to align on key policy and commercial priorities for the maritime sector, reports News Cision. 

Government and Industry Leaders Align on Policy Priorities

This workshop was the third in a series aimed at creating a national maritime strategy, in collaboration with the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), Senator Mark Kelly, and Representative Michael Waltz.

The purpose of the event was to provide multi-stakeholder input to help shape the future of the U.S. maritime strategy, ensuring that decision makers are informed by credible insights from various sectors.

The workshop featured key contributions from ABS Chairman Christopher Wiernicki, MFC Chairman Daniel Maffei, Senator Mark Kelly, and Representative Michael Waltz, reflecting a collaborative approach to national maritime policy development.

The U.S. maritime industry faces several challenges, including economic competitiveness, the erosion of shipbuilding and sustainment capacity, supply chain vulnerabilities, and workforce development issues.

Economic Competitiveness and Workforce Development Concerns

Ensuring economic competitiveness and addressing the workforce development crisis were central themes in the discussion. These factors are essential for the U.S. to maintain a robust maritime industry.

The erosion of shipbuilding capacity and supply chain issues were recognized as critical challenges that need immediate attention from both industry and government stakeholders.

Focus on Energy Transition and Maritime Decarbonization

The workshop also emphasized the pressures and opportunities brought by the energy transition and maritime decarbonization initiatives. It stressed the need for proactive strategies to adapt.

The findings from this workshop will help inform U.S. maritime policy and legislation. Both government and industry seek to navigate evolving demands and opportunities.
