TSB Deploys Investigators After Collision Near Port of Vancouver Involving Cargo Ship

A team of federal investigators from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has been deployed to the Port of Vancouver following a collision between a cargo vessel and a pleasure craft in English Bay late Sunday morning.

Incident Summary

  • Time and Location: The incident occurred around 11:20 a.m. on Sunday, southeast of Lighthouse Park near the southern tip of West Vancouver.
  • Vessels Involved: A large container carrier was involved in a collision with a smaller recreational boat.
  • Casualties and Rescue: The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) marine unit responded to an emergency alert at approximately 11:30 a.m. Two people on the pleasure craft were rescued by a police patrol vessel and brought safely ashore. The Port of Vancouver confirmed no injuries resulted from the crash.

Post-Collision Actions

  • Vessel Stabilization: The pleasure craft sustained significant damage and began taking on water. Emergency teams coordinated dewatering and stabilization operations.
  • Towing: The damaged recreational boat was subsequently towed to Eagle Harbour for haul-out.
  • Port Operations: The Port of Vancouver stated that the incident did not impact port operations.

Investigation

The VPD has handed the investigation over to the TSB, the federal agency responsible for determining the cause and contributing factors of the collision. TSB investigators are now at the Port of Vancouver to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
