WinGD Unveils New High-Pressure LNG Engine for Mega Boxships

As reported by WinGD at Marintec China 2025, the Swiss engine maker has launched its first high-pressure LNG dual-fuel engine, the X-DF-HP. The reveal comes at a time when global decarbonisation plans remain uncertain and interest in LNG-fuelled ships continues to rise.

Designed for Ultra-Large Container Vessels

According to the company, the new engine will be available in X82 and X92 sizes and is tailored for the demanding profiles of ULCVs. First deliveries are expected in 2028. Early comparisons suggest the high-pressure concept could deliver improved efficiency over similar dual-fuel engines.

The X-DF-HP maintains the same auxiliary requirements as other recognised designs, making installation straightforward for shipyards and providing owners with a practical, future-ready option.

Tier III Compliance in Both Modes

The engine meets IMO Tier III requirements in both gas and diesel modes using only a standard SCR. This offers a compact, reliable emissions solution for the largest container ships.

Part of a Fuel-Flexible Portfolio

As reported by WinGD, the X-DF-HP builds on more than a century of Diesel-cycle expertise and joins a multi-fuel line-up that includes methanol/ethanol-ready and ammonia-capable engines. Existing models like the X92-B can be retrofitted to high-pressure LNG or future fuels as regulations evolve.

Why LNG Still Matters

LNG remains a cost-competitive, low-risk pathway for compliance with FuelEU Maritime well into the next decade. Both the X-DF and X-DF-HP platforms can operate on renewable methane blends, enabling owners to reduce emissions without incurring expensive mechanical modifications.

WinGD says the X-DF-HP is the most economical choice for ULCVs pursuing LNG, while the low-pressure X-DF platform offers the best lifecycle value for other vessel types.
