Chemical Freighter Sinks at Sea

On September 30, a tanker carrying 450 metric tonnes of sodium hydroxide was reported to be sinking off the southern coast of Yamaguchi prefecture, Japan.

According to the news released by Japan’s Tokuyama Coast guard.  The tanker vessel started listing about five minutes after departing from the Tokuyamakudamatsu around 1 am (GMT). An emergency call was raised by the ship operator.  All the crew members on board the tanker were rescued.

The cause for the sinking is not known yet, the coast guard officials have assured to dispatch a team of divers to investigate the condition of the vessel and to check whether the ship’s payload can be transferred onto another vessel.

Sodium hydroxide, also known as lye or caustic soda is a common chemical used in household products such as soaps and detergents.  When the chemical comes in contact with water it generates immense heat and can cause burns to the skin and eyes.
