In the Rhine port of Mannheim the water police were notified about a potential dangerous goods leakage on board the “Bitumina III”, 1207 ts, on June 19, 2017, at 4.30 p.m.
What happened?
The ship had loaded about 818 tons of thermal oil. There was a slight smoke between two loaded compartments.
Oil leakage in insulation pipes:
Oil used to heat up the tanks had leaked onto the insulation of the pipes and started to coke, which led to the development of smoke.
Gooda safe:
The dangerous goods were not affected at any time and there was no leakage of thermal oil either inside the tanker or outside.
Fire-fighters alerted:
The alerted firefighters dismissed the heating pipe on the ship and removed the cobbling insulation. No people have been injured.
Cargo shifted to another tanker:
The material damage could not yet be quantified. During the course of the day the cargo was lightered onto another tank barge.
