Watch Out for Cracks in Fuel Pumps

2390

MAN Prime Serv has released an alert/technical insight to watch out for cracks on fuel pumps in MAN B&W 2-stroke diesel engines.

The technical insight states:

Top cover designs that have an angle for the outlet drillings (small bore engine) that are not perpendicular and the contact point not so accessible, have the risk that the edges formed by the two bores may cause initiation of cracks.

The cracks are caused by the notch effect, and the crack formation can propagate either in path A or B.

  • Path A leads to leakage through the stack of injection timing shims.
  • Path B causes internal high-pressure leaks resulting in increased fuel pump index to maintain the mean indicated pressure of the cylinder.
