Almost 250,000 people have crossed by boat to Europe this year. So far, more than 2,000 migrants have died trying to cross the sea to Europe. At least 40 migrants have died in an overcrowded boat in the Mediterranean as per the report of the Italian navy. Some 320 others were rescued when the vessel was intercepted off Libya. Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said rescuers were “still counting the victims.” About 320 people including about 10 women and children had been rescued. Many in the hold died after inhaling fumes from the engine. Dead bodies in the hold floated in the water, fuel and human excrement.
The fishing boat was apparently taking on the water when it was spotted off the Libyan coast and south of the Italian island of Lampedusa. Greek island of Kos rescued more than 200 people in several small boats on Saturday. Greece also uses a ship to house the refugees and to register them.
