A Moroccan Royal Navy coast guard on patrol off the Strait of Gibraltar aborted a drug trafficking operation on Sunday, October 10, off the coast of Tangier, says the news source published in the Morocco World News.

Suspects handed over to Royal Gendarmerie of Tangier

“After a chase of a go-fast, the operation led to the arrest of five traffickers and the seizure of about three tons of chira,” the military source told MAP.

The suspects and the seized cargo were handed over to the Royal Gendarmerie of Tangier, pending further investigations.

Because of its location and proximity to the European continent, the Royal Navy and patrol units are familiar with frequent drug trafficking attempts in Tangier.

General Directorate for National Security (DGSN)

In May, the General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) collaborated alongside Custom officials at the Tangier-Med port, and aborted a large-scale drug trafficking operation.

Moroccan authorities seized 361,672 psychotropic tablets, and 4.477 kg of cocaine from Spain.

Moroccan security services in Kenitra

  • Moroccan security services in Kenitra, near Rabat, aborted another drug trafficking operation two weeks ago, after seizing over 22 kg of pure cocaine.
  • A young 26 year old man was arrested for the offense.

Although cannabis is considered Morocco’s most prevalent drug, the majority of drugs entering the North African country are either heroin strands or raw cocaine, in addition to synthetic drugs such as Ecstasy and LSD.

Most incoming drug shipments originate from Spain, and most outgoing shipments consist mainly of pure cannabis and its derivatives, such as hashish.
