Captain of Drifting Ship Jailed for Grounding Ship on Reef

On November 22, the criminal court in French Polynesia was suspended the captain of a cargo vessel and announced an one-year jail sentence for grounding the ship onto a reef.

What happened?

In June 2018, a Philippines-registered cargo ship ‘Thorco Lineage’ ran aground on the reef of Raroia atoll after drifting due to an engine failure.

The vessel was carrying zinc from the United States to Australia when it ran aground onto the reef.

Captain convicted

The captain of the vessel has been convicted for failing to communicate an engine failure within two days after being adrift in French Polynesian Sea.

The incident came to light after the locals spotted the vessel stranded on the reef and informed the concerned officials.

Company Fined

The cargo vessel was towed to Papeete for repairs of its hull, a special tug from the United States took the vessel to South Korea.

Moreover, the criminal court slapped the shipping company with a fine of a quarter of a million US dollars.
