The adrift cargo vessel that had been rescued by the Canadian Coast Guard off Newfoundland on November 27 after it reportedly ran into trouble after losing its engine power.

What happened?

On November 27, the adrift vessel ‘MV Baby Leeyn’ was towed to safety by the on Canadian Coast Guard off Newfoundland after losing engine power and running adrift.

However, the reason for the vessel running adrift has been found that the vessel had failed to report that it had collided with a dock in Argentina before leaving the port.

Crew failed to notify concerned authorities:

On November 29, an official with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans confirmed that the crew of the boat failed to notify Marine Communications and Traffic Services when the incident occurred.

Transport Canada also released a statement saying that the vessel ‘Baby Leeyn’ left port immediately after the incident and it was unable to inspect for damage. The Transport Canada was notified of the incident only after Marine Atlantic reported the collision.

Dock damaged:

The vessel was inspected for any damages when it returned to port but no damages were found onboard the vessel. However, the dock suffered significant damages as a result of the collision.

The collision with the bow of the vessel had left a hole in the wharf and damaged pilings that support it.

The concerned authorities are assessing the damage and cost necessary for repairing the dock and the ship’s insurers are dealing with the matter.
