On January 23, a cargo vessel reportedly ran aground near Charlotte Amalie Harbor in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

What happened?

The cargo vessel ‘Ocean Spirit I’ reportedly ran aground just off the entrance of the harbor’s East Gregory Channel while reportedly transporting more than $1 million of cargo from St. Thomas to Puerto Rico, including six huge propane trailer trucks, automobiles, lumber and food.

Vessel refloated

The reason for the vessel running remains unknown since the vessel showed no signs of distress or any oil leaks were reported. After an assessment was conducted by the diver it was found that only the keel of the vessel was a bit damaged.

After reviewing the damage, the vessel was scheduled to be refloated during the next high tide so that it can be refloated.

Around noon, the vessel was was assisted by three tow vessels with two triple engine boat pulling the ship’s stern while one Sea Tow crew boat pushed the vessel from side to side to help gently guide it off the rocks.

No injuries or pollution

The vessel was successfully refloated and fortunately, none of the crew members were injured during the attack or any pollution to the environment was reported.
