A Chinese cargo ship was held off Bacolod port, as part of COVID-19 preventive measure, reports ABS CBN News.

What happened?

A Chinese cargo ship was held off Bredco Port in Bacolod City Monday night to prevent any possible novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection from its crew from China.

Authorities said that the vessel MV Unicorn Bravo sailed from Xiamen Port carrying 3.3 metric tons of fertilizer, consigned to a Filipino-Chinese distributor based in Bacolod.

Crew quarantined

According to Lt. Commander Jansen Benjamin of the Philippine Coast Guard in Negros Occidental, the ship has 19 crew members, 14 of which are Chinese.

According to the officials, though the crew’s body temperature was normal, they will remain off Bredco Port. A quarantine officer will be checking their condition on Thursday.

Coronavirus continues to rise

The death toll in mainland China from the new coronavirus continues to rise, with confirmed infections reaching 77,658.

Three cases have been confirmed in the Philippines, one of which has resulted in death, the first one outside China.
