Alert on High Sediment Levels in ARA Fuel Samples

878

  • Intertek Lintec has tested a number of VLSFO bunker samples from vessels that have taken fuel in Rotterdam, Antwerp and Ghent.
  • The data have shown sediment contents above the ISO 8217 0.10% mass limit.
  • The data gained has shown results ranging from 0.27 to 0.75% mass.

Fuel testing agency Intertek Lintec says that over the past two weeks it has detected sediment content above the ISO 8217 0.10% mass limits in very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) supplied to vessels at Rotterdam, Antwerp and Ghent, reports Ship & Bunker.

According to the company, fuel sample results have ranged from 0.27 to 0.75% mass.

Ensuring fuel quality

As Intertek Lintec highlights, high sediment fuels can impede the purification process and promote sludge build up in purifiers. A reduction in purification efficiency can also impact upon the removal of other components such as water and/or cat fines which can also lead to potential wear damage.

The sediment tests also provide useful insights as to the potential stability of the fuel.

Intertek Lintec emphasises that vessels which have recently bunkered at ARA ports should check on fuel quality before use and ensure that the samples are taken correctly together with the supplier at the custody transfer point and witnessed by the ship’s crew. The seal numbers of the samples drawn on the basis of the contract of supply must be recorded on the Bunker Delivery Note (BDN).
