Midsized shipyard STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Co. has signed deals to build 12 ships with Oceanian companies, says an article published in Korea Herald.

 Vessel capacity

The vessels include two 10,000-ton petrochemical carriers (PCs), six 50,000-ton PCs, and four 115,000-ton oil tankers, STX Offshore & Shipbuilding said.

The deal for four oil tankers has an option to build two additional oil tankers, the company said.

About the deal

The deal for four oil tankers has an option to build two additional oil tankers, the company said.

But the shipbuilder did not reveal the value of the deals, citing confidentiality clauses.

Planed for delivery

The ships will be built in its shipyard in Jinhae, 410 kilometers southeast of Seoul, and delivered between the fourth quarter of 2022 and the end of 2023, STX Offshore & Shipbuilding said.

With the latest order, order backlogs of STX Offshore & Shipbuilding reached 28 ships, the shipbuilder said.

Pushing for the sale of shipbuilder

STX Offshore’s creditors led by the state-run Korea Development Bank have been pushing for the sale of the shipbuilder to a local consortium comprising local private equity fund KH Investment and United Asset Management Co., South Korea’s biggest bad debt clearer.

Improving financial status

In April, STX Offshore’s shareholders agreed to reduce its common shares by consolidating 42 shares into one share on July 20 to improve its financial status.

After the capital reduction, the shipbuilder’s capital stock will be decreased to 2.5 billion won ($2.2 million) from 106.6 billion won. (Yonhap)
