Suez Canal Traffic Unaffected! Navigation Statistics Records 8.4% Increase!

According to The Suez Canal Authority, shipping traffic in the channel remains unaffected by the COVID-19 crisis, reports Safety4Sea.

Traffic in the channel 

The Suez Canal Authority announced that the navigation traffic in the channel is regular and is proceeding according to the normal rates of the numbers and tonnage of ships transiting the channel.

Operations unaffected

Suez Canal added, traffic has not been yet affected by the repercussions of the emergence of COVID-19.

During the month of March 2020, navigation statistics recorded 1662 ships crossing from both directions in exchange for 1589 ships crossed during the month of March of last year.

Increase in total net tonnages 

This marks an increase of 4.6%, as the total net tonnages reached 101 million and 101 thousand tons, compared to 97 million 796 thousand tons during the month of March of last year, a difference of 3 million, 305 thousand tons, an increase amounting to 3.4%.

The head of the Suez Canal Authority stated that the navigation statistics during the first quarter of the year 2020 recorded an increase in the number of ships by 8.4%, as well as an increase in the tonnage of vessels crossing the channel by 8.5% compared to the same period last year.
