The pilot vessel ‘L242’ reportedly sank after it was caught in strong currents and the swell of the the vessel ‘Sten Nordic’. The vessel was involved in a fatal accident after the pilot was dropped off near the pilot station outside Emsalö.

Bodies retrieved:

The Swedish Maritime Rescue Center Helsinki responded to the distress call and dispatched boat units from Suomenlinna and Porvoo, along with helicopters from Helsinki and the patrol vessel Turva. The rescuers attempted to lift the pilot boat, but it unexpectedly sank. The divers searched and retrieved two bodies from the interior of the vessel.

Investigation outcomes:

The pilot boat was subsequently refloated and salvaged in mid-December, and brought ashore for further investigation by Kewatec Aluboat in Karleby, Finland. After an investigation was initiated it was found that the pilot boat did not collide with the other ship but it was caught in strong waves which was caused to a swell created by the powerful stern of another vessel. Due to the impact, the vessel was pushed onto its side in a 90 degree angle before it capsized.
