Tanker Intentionally Grounded after Collision with Freighter Off Guangzhou Port

On May 9, an Inbound general cargo vessel YANZHAN 58 reportedly collided with an outbound tanker, Zhen Peng, loaded with 2290 tons of gasoline in Peral river estuary, Guangzhou Port Channel, China.

The tanker sustained breached hull in engine room area from the incident.  In order to save the tanker from sinking two tugboats from Guangzhou Maritime Safety Administration towed the tanker to shallow waters, away from the main navigation channel and intentionally grounded it.

All 15 crew members onboard the tanker have been evacuated to safety.  The tanker is currently stranded near Guangzhou Port and there are no reports of oil leakage from the vessel.

Authorities have started investigations into the incident.
