TORM Arawa rescues 222 refugees near Libya



TORM Arawa, a Singapore flagged tanker carrying refined oil products, saved refugees from two boats near Zawia, Libya.

TORM is one of the world’s leading carriers of refined oil products.  TORM Arawa was sailing close to Zawiya, Libya on 21st June 2015, when it received a distress call from the Italian coast guard requesting its service to rescue two unseaworthy boats carrying refugees across the Mediterranean sea.  The crew rescued 222 people and provided them with food, water and blankets.  The refugees were shored at Port Reggio Calabria in Italy on 22nd June.

“I am pleased that our capable crew acted according to procedures and saved so many lives, reflecting outstanding commitment to international maritime laws and humanitarian efforts,” said Jesper Jensen, Head of TORM’s Technical Division.
