Tradepoint Terminals, a subsidiary of Tradepoint Atlantic, has committed $35 million to upgrade its bulk logistics and port operations. The investment will support the development of a new bulk cargo conveyance system, expansion of both indoor and outdoor bulk storage, enhanced infrastructure, and improved rail connectivity. Located near an existing 1,100-foot pier, the project will introduce a multi-commodity handling system designed to streamline offloading and storage. The goal is to boost throughput and operational flexibility, positioning the terminal among the most efficient on the U.S. East Coast.

Modernizing Bulk Handling Infrastructure at Sparrows Point

The project marks a major step forward in material handling capabilities at Sparrows Point. At its core is a new system featuring high-capacity conveyors and hoppers, equipped with variable speed controls and washdown functions. This setup supports the efficient handling of a wide range of bulk materials, including cementitious products, road salt, and fertilizer.

Russell Williams, Vice President of Tradepoint Terminals, emphasized that the initiative goes beyond equipment upgrades—it’s about building infrastructure that meets the evolving demands of global supply chains. Designed to reduce discharge times for Panamax vessels, the system strengthens Tradepoint Atlantic’s position as a key gateway for bulk cargo. With 50 acres of adjacent paved storage, the expanded infrastructure offers customers greater flexibility and efficiency.

Expanding Capacity to Meet Future Logistics Demands

Kerry Doyle, Managing Director of Tradepoint Atlantic, described the project as a key milestone in the company’s long-term strategy to become one of the nation’s most efficient and diverse logistics hubs. While bulk material handling remains central to current operations, the investment lays the groundwork for expanded capabilities across multiple cargo types—including breakbulk, automobiles, and future containerized freight. The upgrade enhances capacity and operational efficiency, ensuring the terminal can meet the evolving needs of a growing customer base.

Local officials have also expressed strong support for the development. Baltimore County Executive Kathy Klausmeier highlighted the project’s potential to boost the regional economy, modernize port infrastructure, and strengthen the local workforce. The $35 million initiative is seen as a transformative step that reinforces the Port of Baltimore’s role in global trade. Construction is progressing, with system commissioning scheduled for January 2026. Tradepoint Atlantic is actively collaborating with industry partners and shippers to prepare for the expanded capabilities.
