Dear Mfame reader,
Recently we have encountered two incidents on the illegal shipment of weapons.
- Australian Navy Seizes Weapons Haul From Fishing Boat (Reported on 8th march)
- A Ship Full of Weapons Seized (reported on 30th march)
Here is yet another report on weapons seized by the US Navy.
The Military officials revealed that on 28th March 2016, USS Sirocco intercepted and seized the shipment of weapons hidden aboard a small dhow. The seizure which unfolded in the Arabian Sea was the third of its kind in recent weeks.
The Navy revealed that the shipment included 1,500 Kalashnikov assault rifles, 200 rocket-propelled grenade launchers, and 21 0.50-caliber machine guns.
The U.S. Navy released the crew of the dhow carrying weapons after the seizure. A U.S. official told current rules do not allow western naval forces to seize the crew in addition to illicit cargo. “You have to find a country willing to prosecute,” the official said. The nationality of the crew was not disclosed.
