Vessel Caught Fire While Clearing the Oil Spill

On March 31, a vessel reportedly caught fire following an oil spill from a tanker.

What happened?

The vessel ‘Ever Judger’ caught fire following an oil spill that occurred on the Chevron terminal in eastern Kalimanta.

The vessel caught fire when the workers were involved in clearing the oil spill which occurred in the waters off Borneo Islands by lighting it on fire.

Two people dead

The spill was spotted from Jetty 2 of Semayang port to Kampung Atas air, Mekarsari. The blazing oil spill raged on the surface of the water for two metres high and killed two fishermen who were fishing nearby.

The fire spread and reached a bulk carrier which was anchored at Sea. Fortunately, the twenty crew members of Chinese origin escaped the fire unhurt, only one crew member suffered minor burns.

Vessel ravaged

Local tugs were called in to contain the fire but the vessel’s portside and superstructure were severely damaged.

The vessel was loaded with 2.000 tons of coal it caught fire.

An investigation has been initiated to determine the sequence of events leading to the fire.
