Wartsila 31 – The Most Efficient 4-stroke Diesel Engine – Achieves Guinness World Records Title.

Wartsila has launched a new medium speed diesel engine which recently clinched “The Most Efficient 4-Stroke Diesel Engine” title in the Guinness World Records. The engine was verified for its Fuel Efficiency on May 26th, 2015. Most of the 4-Stroke diesel engines have a fuel consumption in the range of 180 to 190 grams/kWhr. However Wartsila 31 proved to be the most economic engine with a fuel consumption of just 165 grams/kWhr. Till this moment, there is no engine maker or an engine in the market (4 Stroke) which can match such low specific fuel oil consumption.

Wartsila 31 is designed to fit any type of vessel which includes but not limited to

  1. Offshore supply vessels,
  2. Dynamic Positioning Vessels,
  3. Cruise & Ferries,
  4. Cargo ships including the Ultra modern LNG carriers.

These fuel efficient engines can fit in any marine segment, where the power range requirement is from 4.2 to 9.8 MW.

Wartsila 31 has a wide range of fuel flexibility, where it can operate on

  1. Marine Fuel oil,
  2. Marine Gas oil,
  3. Dual-Fuel (DF) (LNG), and
  4. Spark-Ignited Gas (SG).

With the above multi-fuel capabilities and fuel economy, Wartsila 31 proves to be the environmental leader meeting the stringent emission standards.

The Wärtsilä 31 is available in 8V, 10V, 12V, 14V and 16V cylinder configurations. Among the many features of this engine are the latest developments in fuel injection systems, engine control systems, and charge air technologies. It is available for applications in mechanical drive installations, for producing electricity when coupled with a generator, for hybrid installations, as well as heavy duty installations or as an auxiliary engine.

With all corners squared – definitely Wartsila 31 has achieved a breakthrough in Efficiency.
