Finnish marine technology group Wartsila and CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company have signed a development deal for hybrid ship construction, reports Cyprus Shipping News.

Hybrid-powered dredger

This five-year agreement aims to jointly develop a hybrid-powered dredger. The agreement was signed on the 3rd of December at the Marintec conference and exhibition that was held in Shanghai.

The agreement aims to make a framework and a mechanism that will help in the research and development of hybrid power systems.

Huangpu Wenchong will be helped by Wärtsilä in the designing and construction by innovating technology, selection of the system, calculation of performance and long term services.

Smart marine approach

Collaboration with industry partners is at the very core of Wärtsilä’s Smart Marine approach to raising efficiencies and eliminating waste throughout the shipping sector,” says Henrik Wilhelms, Director Offshore and Special Vessels at Wärtsilä.

He added, “This is one more example of this philosophy, and we look forward to cooperating with Huangpu Wenchong to create hybrid-powered vessels that will benefit the industry by lowering costs and benefit the planet by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

Hopper dredger

We are very happy to be cooperating in this project with Wärtsilä, a proven technology innovator and industry leader in hybrid solutions for the marine industry,” says Li Dong, Chief Engineer at CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company Limited.

The work will start with a hopper dredger, the vessel that is being built by the shipyard already. For the determination of the most appropriate hybrid solution for that class of dredgers, evaluations will be carried out.
