  • Authorities reveal the items contained within 40 containers that fell overboard from a cargo ship during rough conditions off.
  • This unexpected turn of events take place in the Australia’s east coast on Sunday.
  • NSW residents find unusual cargo washed ashore, which includes packets of surgical face masks and other medical protective gear sent from China.

A recently published article in 7 News written by Summer Woolley reveals how the containers have been washed ashore.  The container contains medical related things and it comes from China.

What happened to the ship?

The Singaporean-flagged APL England hit heavy seas about 73 km south-east of Sydney on its journey from China to Melbourne.  The vessel lost propulsion as it endured heavy rolling, causing stacks of containers to destabilise.

About 40 containers fell into 2 km-deep water.

Medical supplies washed ashore

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said while it is “unclear” exactly which containers fell overboard, initial investigations indicate that “the affected stacks contained a wide range of goods like household appliances, building materials and medical supplies”.

AMSA said it had also received reports of some medical supplies, including face masks, washing up between Magenta Beach and The Entrance.

“These correlate to drift modelling of debris and are consistent with items listed on the ship’s cargo manifest,” the authority said in a statement.

In the manifest, cited by 7 NEWS, the following items are also included:

  • Masks, face shields, goggles meant for St John Ambulance
  • Gazebos, range hoods, chairs and bar stools
  • Pet accessories
  • Food dehydrators and leaf blowers

“Modelling suggests that debris such as this could continue to wash-up over the coming days,” the AMSA said.

Authorities take action

AMSA authorities boarded the container ship at the Port of Brisbane on Tuesday to conduct “a seaworthiness inspection to establish the structural and operational condition of the ship”.

An outcome of the inspection is expected shortly.
