According to an article published in Maritime Bulletin, weird stuff is being reported in the Indian ocean with an Aframax out of control for some 5 hours.

What happened?

An email was sent to all ships managed by a company, reporting abnormal phenomenon, which occurred onboard one of the ships of this company, Aframax tanker, early in the morning May 31.

Ship out of control

The ship slowly but steadily, went out of control, with magnetic compass deviating from that of gyro by some 230 deg, speed reduced to dead ahead, notwithstanding the engine being in full ahead regime.

4 ships in the vicinity are said to close on each other and tanker. The tanker is en route to Cape Town, she resumed sailing some 5 hours after the phenomenon started.

Is it a hoax?

Upon checking the other vessels travelling through the site at the time when it happened, not one of them showed any sign of reducing speed and changing course. Probably, the whole abnormal phenomenon report is a hoax to cover-up mechanical breakdown and delay.

  1. It happen to me as well. On 2008 at the Indian Ocean. Magnenic phenomenon: the magnetic compass turned around like a watch on steroids.. visibility was maybe 100 mtr. Rough swell & wind waves from different directions. It tooks about 4 to 5 hours till the situation came back into control.
