World’s First Ammonia-Fueled Cargo Ship To Be Constructed

Andrew Forrest, a mining magnate, said he hopes to build the world’s first ammonia-powered ship by the end of next year, as part of a larger plan to run his whole fleet on a carbon-free version of the fuel as reported by Bloomberg Green.

In an interview, Forrest, chairman and founder of Fortescue Metals Group, remarked, “This is just the first.” “We currently have roughly 100 ships on the water, and we plan to convert all of them to green ammonia as soon as feasible, well within this decade.”

The ship itself is tiny, with a capacity less than a tenth of that of some of the world’s largest bulk commodities carriers. Ammonia is seen as a greener, future-proof alternative to the oil-derived marine fuels that currently power practically all transport.

The news was made during COP26’s transportation day, which is now taking place in Glasgow.
