21,000 Litres of Diesel Spilled into the River

On Friday, an oil tanker reportedly collided with a cargo vessel. The collision resulted in the spill of 21,000 litres of diesel into the river.

What happened?

The collision occurred at Kirtankhola, the officials are assured that the spill will not cause serious harm to the environment.

Arefin Badal, Assistant Director, Department of Environment of Barisal Division said that, “the spillage would not be creating any serious environmental problem”.

No environmental concerns:

Bimol Kumar Das, District Fisheries Officer said, “He did not think the accident would have any impact on the movement of hilsa in the river”.

Din Mohammad Fakrul Ahasan, Manager, Jamuna Oil Company’s Barisal Depot said, “The oil tanker had 3,12,106 litres of petrol and 9,85,237 diesel”.

Remaining oil pumped into oil depot:

Nearly 21,240 litres of oil was spilled into the Sea. The remaining oil in the tanker was pumped into the oil depot present at the port.

Investigation initiated:

Ahasunul Habib, Manager of oil tanker MT Fazor conveyed that a general complaint was filed in the police station against the owners of the cargo ship.

The District administration officials have formed a 5 member enquiry committee to probe the cause of the collision.

The committee has been asked to submit a report within seven days.

Locals pitch in to conserve environment:

The local fisherman community have pitched in to clean up the areas affected by the oil spill.

Some amount of oil was spilled into the river from the 1.2 lakh litre chamber that cracked. The remaining oil was transferred to another empty chamber present in the tanker.
